WIPO releases patent landscape report into GenAI
A recent WIPO report has highlighted the enormous growth of patent activity in relation to generative artificial intelligence. The report highlights the extent to which Chinese companies are filing patents in the field of GenAI.
The report provides a fascinating overview of the various GenAI models, and the applications to which they are most suited. GenAI models can be used to create a wide range of material, including text (ChatGPT), speech, music and other sounds, images (such as the image accompanying this post), code and molecules.
Since 2018, the highest growth has been seen in GenAI patents for biotech applications. Technologies such as Google’s AlphaFold, which enables researchers to predict complex protein structures from their amino acid sequence, promise to revolutionise medical research. AlphaFold has been made freely available for non-commercial use via a Creative Commons licence.
